Now that spring is finally here, it’s time to start a new countdown: the countdown to barbecue season!

Take a look out your back window at your deck. Is it looking a little worse for the wear? LaffCo. Painting has three deck maintenance tips to get your deck looking as good as new…just in time for those backyard parties!

Deck Maintenance Tips - Power Washing1. Power Washing…Done Right

Obviously, power washing is important when it comes to cleaning up the look of your deck.

What many customers do not know is that the products used by contractors are super-important. And if you’re planning on tackling this step yourself, there are several things you need to know.

If you want to complete remove the old stain, then you will need to follow a 2 step process:

  • Step 1 – put down a deck stain stripper, then power wash the entire surface
  • Step 2 (very important!) – you must neutralize the stripper and treat the deck with a conditioning product like Revive by Sherwin Williams

If you’re just looking to freshen up your deck, skip the stain stripper, condition your deck with Revive, and then give it a good power washing.

Finally, if all you want is to give your deck a quick cleaning, use a basic deck cleaner and then power wash.

Deck Maintenance Tips - Finish2. Use Only The Best Stains

Do not cheap out on stains!

The whole point is to keep your deck looking as good as new, for as long as possible.

Cheaper stains won’t last as long, and before you know it you’ll find yourself right back at the beginning of this whole process!

Also, when purchasing a stain, be sure that the one you choose is specifically intended for outdoor deck use. Other stains are formulated for inside projects, and won’t work on a deck.

Deckskapes by Sherwin Williams or ARBORCOAT by Benjamin Moore are highly recommended by LaffCo. Painting for wood decks.

Deck Maintenance Tips - Painting3. Consider Painting!

I love a wood deck, but after a while it becomes apparent that a wood deck has seen better days.

You might be considering a composite material to get the look of a wood deck without the risk of future decomposing. However, composite can be quite expensive, and oftentimes isn’t worth the cost.

For an attractive-looking wood deck, consider painting! A two-toned deck with the floor and railings painted different colors looks amazing!

Using a high-quality exterior paint such as Duration by Sherwin Williams will ensure that your deck locks in its color for years to come.

For an extremely fine finish to your deck, try Fine Paints of Europe, an international product sold by Benjamin Moore.
