Picking Paint Colors is Hard
There are over 1,500 paint colors available today at Sherwin-Williams, a leading paint supplier.
How are you supposed to choose the perfect color from over 1,500 available choices?
The Current State of Paint Colors
The Wall Street Journal recently provided a recap of the most popular paint colors by region of the country. For the East, that color was Powder Blue (SW2863), seen at right. The East was more neutral than an area like the Southwest which favors burnt orange, green, and dark red.
The article continues, “Consumers are more adventurous with colors than in prior years.” Based on LaffCo’s experience, this is not the case. In 2009 and 2010, this was very true – many homeowners used bold colors and usually highlighted things with an accent wall (one wall painted a different color than the others).
Today, many homeowners are opting for neutral, softer colors. Conservative seems to be the name of the game with paint colors – in some cases, only 2-3 colors are seen in an entire home!

With so many colors and shifting tastes, how can one decide what’s best for them?
First, find inspiration anywhere you can. A friend’s house, local store, TV show, anything. You can even walk into a local paint store and ask what’s popular! If possible, take a picture. From there, plug it into Chip It, a website by Sherwin-Williams that can take any image and show you the specific colors.
If you’re having trouble, check out the list below. These are among the most popular colors chosen by LaffCo. customers.
- Blonde (SW6128) – Mustard Yellow
- Gateway Gray (SW7644) – Olive Green
- Latte (SW6108) – Beige
- Silverpointe (SW7653) – Soft Blue/Gray
- Urban Putty (SW7532)- Neutral
With a popular color in hand, it’s time to individualize it for you.
Paint colors are like clothing – you want them to look good but you don’t want other people to have what you’re wearing. You want to be unique while fitting in.
Find the color swatch for your desired paint. It will contain colors that are very similar to the one you picked. In many cases, it will be tough to tell the colors apart! Decide on the one you like the most.
